قال خليفة البحرانيّ لمالك : عظنا يا أبا عبد الله ؟ قال : بما أعظ يا أبا يحى ؟ إنك والله إن عرفت الله حق معرفته ، أغناك ذلك عن كل كلام وموعظةٍ . يا أبا يحى إن المؤمنين : لم يعبدوا إلههم عن رؤيةٍ وإنما عبدوه عن دلالةٍ .
إنهم والله لما نظروا إلى اختلاف الليل والنهار ، ودوران هذا الفلك ، وارتفاع هذا السقف المرفوع بغير عمدٍ ، ومجاري هذه الأنهار والبحار ،علموا والله أن لذلك صانعاً مدبراً ، لا يعزب عنه مثقال ذرة من خلقه ، في السماوات ولا في الأرض حتى كأنما عبدوه عن رؤية .
فهم في الدنيا حية قلوبهم ، ميتة جوارحهم إلا عند الذكر، والمناجاة ، والنهوض إلى طاعة الله تعالى، قال : فبكى مالك يومئذٍ بكاءً شديداً .
