وإن أقمت حكم الله فيما استرعاك عليه ، تعيش في قصرك منعماً ، فتأذى بن هبيرة من مقالته ، ثم ودعه إلى الباب ، وأمر له : بثلاث آلاف دينار، فرفضها .
فقال له ابن عمه : خذها تعيننا على الحياة . فقال : منحني ذلك المال ظناً منه أن بي خير ، فإن كان الأمر كذلك ، فخير الله خير من ماله ، وأنا لم أطلب إلى رضى الله تعالى مالاً .
وأن ظن بي شراً ، فما كان لي أن اخذ ذلك المال منه فإني : لا استحقه في نظره .
