قال الهمذاني : رأيتُ على ظهر كف شُريح العابد ، قُرحة ، فقلت : يا أبا أمية ماهذا؟ قال : هذا بما كسبت أيديكم ، ويعفو عن كثير .
وما أصاب هؤلاء الصحابة ، لم يكن بجرم كبير ارتكبوه فهم : مجاهدون وعبّاد وأهل قيام ليل ، وأهل بر . لعل ما أصابهم من اللمم التي أراد الله أن يطهرهم بعقوباتها في الدنيا لكرامتهم على الله سبحانه وتعالى .
